Every weekend Orfila Vineyards and Winery hosts a free event at their winery marketed as “Tunes on the Terrace”. This community-based event runs from 3:30-5:30 pm on most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and features a variety of musicians and local business owners. Though the terrace and tasting room are both 21+, any persons younger than 21 are welcome to enjoy the music and scenery from Orfila’s picnic area located near the entrance of the winery.
Nestled in the West end of San Pasqual Valley rests a charming hilltop estate known as Orfila Vineyard & Winery. This award-winning San Diego North County winery has been a vibrant source of culture and community since its establishment in 1993. The vineyard’s current location has a history going back to 1973, when grapes were originally planted on the property. During that time, the location was known as San Pasqual Winery and later as Thomas Jaeger Winery. The name then changed to Orfila Vineyards and Winery when Proprietor Ambassador Alejandro Orfila purchased Thomas Jaeger Winery.
Orfila’s terrace often houses a variety food trucks as well as other eatery and craft vendors. Rick Towner, the owner of Pacifica Culinaria—a unique San Diego based business that provides local, gourmet avocado and olive oils—had a table of products displayed next to the entrance of the tasting room. Towner provided samples of a variety of oils and pleasant conversation to those that entered the winery. Pacifica Culinaria has been a vendor at Tunes on the Terrace in the past and Towner expressed genuine enjoyment in being involved with the event. He added that “Orfila
will soon be carrying our products in their tasting room.” Orfila’s dedication to supporting small businesses can be seen as truly nourishing to the health of business commerce in the San Diego area.
The live music being featured every weekend allows Orfila to offer an opportunity for local artist to share their craft with the community in a setting that is both receptive and relaxing. San Diego based musician Charlie Rae has been a featured act for Tunes on the Terrace several times before. Rae stated that she “always enjoys playing” at Orfila’s because of the tranquil environment of the vineyard and the friendly people who often attend the event. The brassy-voiced female vocalist serenaded the crowd this past Sunday with both upbeat rock songs and soothingly soft ballads. Rae had her self-titled album Charlie Rae available for purchase at the winery.
Orfila offers a variety of wines at their tasting room, one of the most popular being their Sparkling Dionysus. This is a semi-dry floral orange blossom wine that has a bright citrus character to its taste, and a floral and spring-like aroma. In addition to wine, the tasting room also houses many different locally made crafts and unique decor that may be purchased by those visiting Orfila.
Not only does Tunes on the Terrace offer a wonderful opportunity to appreciate fine wine and the rolling hills of San Pasqual Valley, it also provides a platform for local businesses and musicians to connect with the greater Escondido community. Let Orfila’s enthusiasm for culture and community be an example to aspiring business students to begin connecting with and promoting their fellow entrepreneurs both today and in the future.
