For $5, JPCatholic students and employees spend their Fridays having fun on a budget at Ice-Plex, Escondido’s local ice skating rink.
Skating sessions are open to all ages and skill levels. “Ice skating is a great activity for both the beginner and the experienced,” said Veronica Argentieri, a junior at JPCatholic. The rink offers what they call “E-Z skaters,” which resemble walkers and can be used by inexperienced skaters for balance or by experienced skaters for all sorts of mischievous purposes.
The normal price of adult admission for public skating is $8 and $2 for skate rental. Senior Jacob Hotovy takes advantage of the half-price deal often. He said, “Hey, we’re poor college students, so $5 is kinda nice.”
JPCatholic employees and students make the time to go skating together. “Ice skating is so great – we often go as an Admissions team as a way to relax after the week and have fun outside of the office,” said employee Maria Hotovy. Senior Josh Shaffer said, “It is completely worth it for a college student on a budget.”
Jacob said he would recommend $5 Fridays to JPCatholic students. “It’s a good way of getting out of Latitude [33 apartments]. Plus, it’s cheap and close by. If you’re not good at ice skating, don’t let that stop you, because you’ll still have a good time.”
